Lactation Center

Breastfeeding Private Consultations
After the birth of your baby, the Center also provides private breastfeeding consultations, Breastpump sales and rental and other specialized products for the new family. Translators are available for our Spanish and Creole speaking clients. Our staff has over 27 years of maternal/child health experience, Faith B. Ploude, BA, IBCLC, RLC, Anita Jiha AS, IBCLC, RLC and Patti Hoffman, BSN, IBCLC, RLC are all International Board Certified Lactation Consultants.

Prenatal Breastfeeding

One - 2 ½ hour session

Learn about the following on breastfeeding:

  • The advantages and disadvantages of breastfeeding.
  • What to expect the first couple of weeks.
  • The anatomy and physiology of lactation.
  • The components of breastmilk.
  • The different types of breast feeders.
  • How the baby will latch-on and positioning.
  • How to know if your baby is getting enough to eat.

This class will provide invaluable information with an emphasis on overcoming difficulties, calming the newborn, understanding newborn feeding cues and the truth about breastpumps.

Home with Baby Classes

One - 1 ½ hours session $5 per class

These classes are especially for mothers who want to enhance their parenting skills. The underling purpose is to help all mothers to develop a parenting style that is right for their family. Classes are separated into age appropriate formats; from birth to toddlers, this helps to enhance learning about your baby's developmental stages.

Different age appropriate classes:

  • Birth to 3 Months Support Group
  • 4-8 Months Support Group
  • 9 months to walkers
  • Toddler Support Group
  • Mothers of Two (newborns and toddlers together) "Double trouble"

Some of the topics include but are not limited to:

  • Week one - Parenting
  • Week two - Returning to Work
  • Week three - Solid Foods
  • Week four - Dental health and weaning
  • Week five - Open Forum

Daddy and Me

One - 1 ½ hours session $10 per class

This class is especially for the male half of the parenting team. The underling purpose is to guide new dads into developing a parenting style that is right for his family. Discover the joys of being an involved dad and understand the changes that children bring to the marriage. Facilitator Dr. Jonathan Cohen. Some of the topics include but are not limited to:

  • What is the role of the modern day dad?
  • When do I discipline my baby?
  • Is there sex after childbirth?
  • How do I play with my baby?
  • What it takes to be a great dad?

Returning to Work

One - 1 ½ hours session $10 per class

Breastfeeding provides a mother and her baby with a unique bond. This class shows the working mother how to continue this perfectly rewarding attachment with her child when she returns to work. Topics discussed are, maintaining milk supply, pumping issues, sleeping and coping techniques.

Infant Massage

Five week series $80 per series

Infant massage is a form of intimate communication between parent and child. Parents communicate using touch, expressions and voice. Infant massage does not require sophisticated equipment, toys or experience. It can take place during several infant routines, such as bathing and diaper changing. It also teaches mothers and infants how to relax. It helps the parent to understand their baby and can help meet the infant’s needs. Appropriate developmental milestones are discussed and encouraged. Natural Family Planning - No Charge

This class educates couples on how to use natural methods as a means of contraception.
